The adaptive immune responses in inflammatory bowel disease

It is frequently written that the aetiology of the inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) remains unknown. While we may not have have a complete understanding of the underlying molecular defects causing these diseases we have a fairly detailed mastery of the immunological mechanisms involved. The following discussion of the pathogenesis of IBD will discuss these immunological mechanisms and how they may impact on disease pathogenesis.
