Laparoscopic-assisted sigmoid colectomy for recurrent diverticulitis has become increasingly popular throughout recent years in a vast number of hospitals . One of the main and most obvious advantages is the superior cosmetic results following a laparoscopic-assisted sigmoid colectomy. While many surgeons master the technical requirements in order to perform this operation, the net evidence to support this approach as advantageous for the patient compared to the open operation remains limited. Here, we aim to review the studies and evidence that provide the basis for the argument that the laparoscopic-assisted technique is superior to the conventional approach.
