Introduction: Gastrointestinal infections are common especially in childhood. We report on two boys with ulcerative colitis in whom diagnosis and treatment of the disease was complicated by Salmonella and CMV.Patient 1: A 12-year-old boy was referred because of protracted diarrhoea and elevated ESR. Physical examination was normal. Ultrasound revealed thickening of the ileo-caecal wall and mesenteric lymphadenopathy. Stool cultures were positive for Salmonella. Lactulose and Lactobacillus GG decreased stool frequency; cultures remained unchanged. At colonoscopy there was pancolitis with several caecal ulcerations. Biopsies demonstrated features of inflammatory and of infectious bowel disease. Treatment with ciprofloxacin and sulphasalazine resulted in normalization of stool frequency, ESR and elimination of Salmonella. Biopsies of re-colonoscopy were compatible with ulcerative colitis.
