Changes in InterIeukin-6 (11-6) and Cytokine Antagonists (II- Ira and sTNFRI) Serum Concentration in Patients After Esophagectomy for Esophageal Cancer Receiving Nutritional Support Both Pre- and Postoperatively

The study was performed to investigate the changes in interleukin-6 (IL-6), cytokine antagonists (IL-lra and sTNFRI) serum concentration in patients with esophageal carcinoma receiving pre- and postoperative nutrition. Studies included 17 patients with cancer of the esophagus or cardia who had undergone esophageal and gastric resection. Pre- and postoperatively nutritional support was administered. Serum concentrations of IL-6, L-lra, sTNFRI and nutritional status were measured preoperatively before, after the application of nutritional support and during postoperative nutrition. Studies show that in patients with lower esophageal cancer the nutritional treatment applied in the preoperative period results in a significant increase in IL-6 concentration and a marked increase in IL-lra concentration. During postoperative nutritional treatment the significantly elevated IL-6 concentrations remain longer in malnourished patients with postoperative complications. The significantly elevated IL-lra concentrations occur in the group of malnourished patients with postoperative complications.
