ISOSTATIC PRESSING OF GUN PROPELLANT MIXTURES

In industry isostatic pressing is used for compacting of metal, ceramic or polymer particles or for sterilizing of foodstuff. The advantage of isostatic pressing in comparison to uniaxial pressing is the uniform pressurization and densification of the material without the formation of stress cracks. At Fraunhofer ICT an isostatic pressing equipment is built up in the test facility area. Isostatic pressing experiments of water wet DNDA-gun propellant raw mixtures were performed. DNDA (dinitro-diaza -pentane, -hexane and -heptane) is a special plasticizer for nitrocellulose. The most extraordinary property of these DNDA-propellants is the low temperature coefficient (LTC) burning behaviour.
