The gas-phase close above of two reacting thermite mixtures, a substoichoimetric Al/CuO and a stoichiometric Mg/CuO composition were experimentally investigated in air and nitrogen with fast UV/VIS emission spectroscopy. The time resolved spectra in the UV/VTS range provide information about the formed species and their time of appearance. Therefore the line integral intensities of the involved elements and the diatomic molecules were analyzed. The differences in both investigated atmospheres are discussed. From rotational resolved UV/VIS spectra of the formed diatomic molecules AlO and MgO the gas-phase temperature was determined by comparison of calculated with experimental spectra using a non-linear least squares fit. Additionally, the experimental setup allows determining the ignition temperature in both atmospheres. For this the base plate below the sample was heated with a Bunsen burner and simultaneously the surface temperature of the plate was detected by a NIR spectrometer.
