By means of the Flash-Evaporation technique, submicron energetic materials can be prepared in a continuous spray process in the laboratory in a multigram scale. The median particle size that can be obtained by this process ranges from 100 to 500 nm. By using common solvents the process can be adapted to a large number of energetic materials ranging from primary explosives over secondary explosives to propellants. Besides the preparation of pure energetic substances, nano-composites can be prepared in the same manner in a single step process. Using the Flash-Evaporation technique, composites with a highly homogeneous distribution in the submicron scale are obtained, maxing out the high potential of the nanomaterials and opening the way to new materials. The nano-composites can either be prepared from all soluble starting materials but also from dispersible components in nano-dispersions. Combining nanostructuration and mixing in a single process can be an economic alternative to traditional processes.
