AN INSENSITIVE MELT-CAST ENERGETIC MATERIAL: 1-METHYL-2,4,5-TRINITROIMIDAZOLE: MTNI

1-Methyl,2,4,5-trinitroimidazole[1] ( MTNI) was developed as novel energetic material. MTNI is a new, promising insensitive melt-cast energetic material. It is a pale yellow crystalline solid whose structure was characterized by NMR and x-ray diffraction. MTNI has a melting point of 85 °C and is calculated to have 84% of the power of HMX. It is thermally stable with a DSC exotherm of 173 °C, passes the vacuum stability test and is relatively insensitive to impact compared to HMX.
