Stolar Research Corporation developed the Horizon Sensor [HS] to measure uncut coal thickness in real time while cutting with mining machines. The HS system, developed with the aid of a grant from the Department of Energy's National Energy Technology Laboratory, mounts on mining machine cutter drums. The sensor is based upon the physics principles of a Resonant Microstrip Patch Antenna whose impedance varies depending on the thickness of uncut coal. The impedance is measured on the cutter drum and sent by radio waves to a display near the machine operator who directs the machine appropriately. The Horizon Sensor is primarily an enabling technology for automation or 'agile mining'. The technology allows coal to be mined selectively, while reducing mining height and reject. This technical innovation (R & D 100 Award Winner) is quickly demonstrating improvements in productivity, coal quality, and miner safety at several prominent coal mines in the United States.
