Detection of roof geology variation using recorded drilling parameters

Variation in rock properties in a mine or between mines complicates rock bolting design and the application of bolt-based support systems. Over the years, there has been growing interest in using the recorded drilling parameters (thrust, torque, penetration rate, rotational rate, and bit position) to detect the ever-changing roof geology. However, most of the efforts focused on drillability of the rock in conjunction with specific energy that is directly calculated from the recorded drilling parameters and did not consider the effects of energy lost and the adjustment of the hydraulic system during the drilling process. In this research, a new drilling parameter, drilling hardness, was derived and applied by considering the energy lost during the drilling operation. The predicted results from the laboratory and field tests are also presented.
