Low energy Ultraviolet-A (UVA) radiation curable coatings are generating tremendous interest in the automotive industry especially in the refinish market and end of line repair (EOL repair). To respond to this market interest a Miniaturization, Automation and Parallelization (MAPS) study was used to screen various resins and resin combinations that are suitable for refinish applications. Using the combinatorial chemistry technique new UVA radiation curable refinish primers were successfully developed and evaluated. These primers can dramatically reduce the application time approximately from forty minutes to less than two minutes. With certain chemistries and formulations, cure time of less than a second can be achieved. The details of the investigation, cure chemistries suitable for UVA cure and various lamp assemblies used are presented.
