The Thames-Rawlins Research Group designed and synthesized a novel class of vegetable oil-based monomers for incorporation into emulsions. These monomers are termed as vegetable oil macromonomers (VOMMs) and primarily serve to depress the minimum filming temperature by functioning as internal, non-fugitive plasticizers. A VOMM based on soybean oil (SAM) was evaluated in emulsion system containing diacetone acrylamide and adipic dihydrazide. SAM was copolymerized along with conventional monomers at varying levels to study their effect on various coating properties. It was shown that SAM incorporation improved latex coalescence, and afforded good wet adhesion, block resistance, and scrub resistance. The performance properties suggest promise for soybean oil-based VOMMs in architectural coatings and promote the use of natural resources in waterbome coatings.
