A numerical hybrid morphological model for a barred coast is presented. The model is a hybrid in the sense that it combines a detailed process-based two-dimensional depth-integrated model system with a simple rule-based model for the profile development. The coastal profile is schematized as a basic profile with a bar superposed. The properties (width and height) of the bar can vary in time and along the coast. Examples of simulations for a long uniform coast and a coast with a small river mouth are given. On the uniform coast a system of rip channels is formed spontaneously, on long term an equilibrium situation is reached. The river interacts with the migrating rip channels and causes a depression and displacement of the bar crest off the mouth.
