The technetium isotope, Tc, is a long lived radionuclide with a half life of 2.1X10~5 years, produced with a yield of ~6% during nuclear fission which exists in solution as the pertechnetate anion, TcO_4. The pertechnetate anion does not bond well to soils and is highly mobile in groundwater as such it is highly desirable to capture and immobilise the TcO_4 anion for long term storage. An integrated solution is proposed for the capture and disposal of this anion using layered double hydroxides (LDHs) as the capture medium.
