This paper will define the concept of "Carrier Ethernet" focusing on the delivery of guaranteed Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and QoS, as well as on reliability, scalability, and operations issues-all of which are of top priority for Service Providers. This paper will explore how Carrier Ethernet solutions are playing a key role in the evolution of carrier networks worldwide in terms of: End-to-end Service Level Agreements (SLAs); Carrier-class protection and service restoration; Ease of service management -point-and-click provisioning; TDM over Ethernet for SONET/SDH integration (CES); The role of MPLS and VPLS The paper will conclude by examining emerging Ethernet service offerings such as ELINE (Ethernet Private Line), E-LAN (VPLS) and applications such as DSL Backhaul and Triple Play.
