The controversy of Chinese WLAN standards GB 15629.11-2003[1] and GB 15629.1102-2003[2] has come to an end when Chinese Vice Premier Wu Yi announced the decision to indefinitely delay implementation of the Wireless LAN Authentication and Privacy Infrastructure (WAPI) standard. However, such a political decision should not end the future of a technology. There are possibilities to apply WAPI authentication and encryption characteristics to enhance the reliability of wireless access and the security of data transfer effectively. This article describes WAPI concept and proposes possibilities to utilize WAPI in WLAN.
