Shifting Priorities of Telephony, VoIP, and IP Service Providers in Developing Countries - One Carrier's Perspective

Fusion is an international carrier focused on building IP-based telecommunication to, in, from, and between emerging countries throughout the world. This presentation will provide a real-world perspective on the approaches of one carrier, and convey to the attendees the considerations that were used to transition from a TDM-based international wholesale carrier to a robust provider of wholesale, retail, and localized IP services in the developing world. Among the "shifting priorities" that were considered and addressed are: technological developments and challenges, bandwidth availability, local infrastructure and "last mile" considerations, local customs and market requirements, financial implications, and regulatory concerns. Challenges included lack of comprehension by vendors of "real world" issues and the very real security concerns presented by VoIP in a carrier environment.
