BROADCAST-QUALITY VIDEO OVER IP NETWORKS: TRIPLE PLAY MADE EASY FOR TELCOS

Datamonitor predicts that approximately 15 million households will purchase IP delivered television (IPTV) services by the end of 2007, generating global revenues in excess of USD7.5 billion. The industry expects to see a complete transformation in the networks and the service portfolios of local telephone companies (ILECs or telcos). As telcos deploy entertainment video services, they'll have to decide whether to use a traditional broadcast overlay network of their own, resell a satellite TV service, or implement video over a high-end IP network. While reselling a satellite TV service may be the most expedient, an IP-based solution is the only solution that can deliver a truly converged video-voice-data experience (the Triple Play). While broadcast-quality video over IP is an excellent long-term strategic decision for a telco, implementing it is not without challenges. This paper addresses the benefits, the challenges, and solutions to using IP as the transport mechanism of choice for broadcast-quality video services.
