For sandwiches loaded in edgewise compression, all grooves and kerfs need to be filled with resin or core bonding adhesive, to avoid reduction of the load bearing capacity. It is also shown that by filling the kerfs, the resistance of foam cored sandwiches against buckling and/or skin wrinkling can be increased. Due to the higher compressive and shear moduli skin wrinkling is not a failure mode likely to occur in Balsa cored sandwiches. Sandwiches cored with Balsawood can be designed thinner than their counterparts cored with foam if they need to resist buckling. Depending on the length of the column, core density and amount of absorbed resin, this can result in some weight and cost savings.
