AN OVERVIEW – CURRENT RESEARCH ACTIVITIES AT THE SHEFFIELD UNIVERSITY WASTE INCINERATION CENTRE (SUWIC)

The safe disposal of waste materials has now become an urgent environmental problem. The traditional method of landfilling waste had created so many environmental problems that countries including the UK have imposed severe restrictions on landfilling burnable waste. Energy efficient waste management strategies aimed at reducing the amount of waste to be landfilled through incineration, while maximising the recovery of the waste energy, is now recognised as an environmentally friendly technique for the safe disposal of waste. Hence, waste incineration is now at the forefront of combustion research and is fundamental to rational incinerator operation and the evolution of innovative processes such as co-incineration and integrated incinerator/gas turbine plants. The research activities currently conducted at the Sheffield University Waste Incineration Centre (SUWIC) are focused on this important area.
