The efficiency of a dense medium cyclone is very important especially when difficult coals are treated. The efficiency has to be monitored frequently to ensure optimal performance. Different kinds of methods available for the determination of efficiencies of dense medium cyclones are surveyed to provide a perspective for the introduction of radio density tracers. The current status of radio density tracer technology is reviewed and deficiencies in present day systems are elucidated. This paper examines the impact of specific parameters on the performance of radio density tracer systems and culminates with suggestions on refinements to existing technology for improved performance. The relevance of radio density tracer technology is emphasized and the benefits to industry are affirmed.
