Development Progress and Real World Fuel Cell Hybrid Bus Experience in Municipal Fleets

The regional nature of municipal bus fleets and the direct impact of urban emission elimination make fuel cell hybrid buses an attractive alternative to conventional and intermediate technical solutions such as diesel and diesel hybrid power-trains. UTC Fuel Cells (UTCFC) has made significant progress in improving the performance (efficiency, durability, reliability, power density, etc) of such vehicles in the past 3 years. This paper summarizes the successful municipal fleet demonstrations powered by these engines highlighting the advantages of UTCFC's unique low-pressure fuel cell system. The paper also describes the next generation UTCFC fuel cell engine, the PureMotion 120 fuel cell power system.
