Applications of new batteries in electric vehicles need a lot of system validation from design integration to real world testing. A good management system of batteries is a crucial bridge between battery characteristics and applications. It is especially true in the early stage of lithium ion batteries introduced into vehicle applications. In this paper, we will present an autonomous and extendable management system for modular battery. Besides the basic monitoring functions, the system features the synchronous control of switches among modules and the information exchange channel. The battery was extended with additional modules to fulfill voltage and power rating of various EV applications. The extendable feature makes it simpler to evaluate applications of batteries with various configurations.
