In this paper, the existence of self-excited oscillation of a taut string is observed when the string is stretched in a wire-plate electrode system with a corona discharge in order to give some useful information on final goal of our research. The goal is to explain the outbreak mechanism of self-excited oscillation of the wire electrode in the wire-plate electrode system. Some experiments are made under the condition that the wire oscillation is not excited. This means that an electrostatic field is constant with respect to time, and only a fluid field is unsteady even though the string oscillation is excited. As a result, the horizontal component of the string oscillation is self-excited with the fundamental natural frequency. In particular, the similarity between the string oscillation and the wire oscillation is confirmed. Moreover, relationship between the fluid force and the string oscillation is examined experimentally. It is confirmed that the fluid force is main reason for the outbreak mechanism of the string oscillation. Furthermore, the outbreak mechanism is discussed theoretically under some assumptions, and a guideline for our future theoretical work is also indicated.
