Ceramic cross flow membranes are durable and long lasting micro filters. Their construction encourages use in aggressive processing environments. Ceramic membranes can be continuously cleaned in place by back pulsing, which technique minimizes the need for off-line cleaning. Under utilized in the U.S. market, ceramic membranes have been used extensively in Europe. The essential parts of a ceramic membrane system are presented along with characteristics of ceramic membrane elements and how they are situated in housings to make filter units. Successful applications in the process industries are given as examples.
