A durable, temperature-resistant (to 1,200 1,200oC) ceramic fiber filter cartridge, made of a nonwoven ceramic fiber media, removes greater than 90% of objectionable volatile particulate from exhaust streams. At a designated point, a microwave or other energy source is activated to combust the concentrated particles to harmless carbon dioxide and water, returning the filter cartridge to its original clean condition. The core of the technology is the proprietary silicon carbide fiber that converts microwave energy to heat energy at almost 100% efficiency. This ability of the microwave filter to concentrate volatile particulate at low temperatures and provide an efficient, uniform heating source to eliminate the pollutants applies to diesel engine exhaust, restaurant grease emissions, computer chip manufacturing and many other industrial applications. C) The patented Microwave-Cleaned Particulate Filter System consists of a filter cartridge, similar to the air or oil filter cartridge in a car, which traps particles as small as 10 nanometers. The filter cartridge is surrounded by a metal microwave applicator that distributes the microwaves sent from the attached microwave power source on the demand of an automatic controller. When the filter is saturated with particles, the microwave source activates for a few minutes to oxidize the trapped particles. This combusts the volatile particles to harmless carbon dioxide and water and returns the filter to it original clean condition. The same platform technology applies to all of the potential market applications and simply requires different sizes of silicon carbide fiber cartridges and microwave sources. The silicon carbide fiber and the microwave filter will be described and some filter test results on diesel engines will be discussed.
