VOISEY'S BAY PROJECT - A CHALLENGE TO INUIT USE OF THE LANDFAST SEA ICE

This paper discusses how important landfast sea ice is to the Inuit of Labrador who are Sikumiut, people of the sea ice and how the Voisey's Bay Project challenges the relationship between Inuit and the sea ice. This paper provides background information necessary to appreciate the obstacles that had to be overcome and the effort it took for LIA and Voisey's Bay Nickel Company Ltd. (VBNC) to reach the agreements necessary to allow the Project to proceed - and to break the ice. This paper is a companion to Rowell and Metcalfe (2005).
