Mercury and its Impact on Ethylene Purification Catalysts Mercury has come to be recognized as a significant contaminant in condensate, naphtha and even gas cracker feed stocks. Due to the high volatility of mercury and Hg compounds, Hg migrates to areas in the plant that are typically considered poison-free. Performance of precious metal (palladium) catalysts used in selective hydrogenation of acetylenes and dienes are affected by mercury contamination. This paper will present the impact of mercury contamination on selective hydrogenation catalysts and suggest some means of protecting the precious metal catalysts by mercury sequestration and removal.
