The papers in this volume were presented at the 17th AnnualACM Symposium on Parallelism in Algorithms and Architectures(SPAA), held on July 17-20, 2005, in Las Vegas, NV, USA. Thesymposium was co-located with the ACM Symposium on Principles ofDistributed Computing (PODC).>The conference was sponsored by the ACM Special Interest Groupson Algorithms and Computation Theory (SIGACT) and ComputerArchitecture (SIGARCH) and organized in cooperation with theEuropean Association for Theoretical Computer Science (EATCS).Financial support was provided by the Intel Corporation, and theprogram committee meeting was partially supported by the Researchand Academic Computer Technology Institute (RACTI) of Greece.>The thirty-six technical presentations that appeared at theConference were selected by the program committee after electronicdiscussion and a meeting of one and a half day. The technicalpresentations were selected out of one hundred submitted extendedabstracts. The meeting tookplace in Athens, Greece. The committeemade its decisions based on perceived quality and originality, aswell as appropriateness to the theme of the symposium. The mix ofselected papers reflects the unique nature of SPAA in bringingtogether the theory and practice of parallel computing. SPAAdefines parallelism very broadly to encompass any computational"device" or scheme that can perform multiple operations or taskssimultaneously or concurrently. This year, SPAA technical papersinclude, for example, papers in networking, the Web, sensornetworks and quantum computing. The technical papers in this volumeare to be considered preliminary versions, and authors aregenerally expected to publish polished and complete versions inarchival scientific journals.>In addition to the technical presentations, this volume includesfive brief announcements presented at the SPAA review session.These announcements were selected either from abstracts submittedto be considered as brief announcements or from extended abstractssubmitted to be considered either as a technical presentation or asa brief announcement. The committee's decisions were based on theperceived interest of these contributions, with the goal that theyserve as bases for further significant advances in parallelism incomputing. Extended versions of the SPAA brief announcements may bepublished later in other conferences or journals.
