The high resolution time of flight spectrometer (TOF-TOF) is one of the instruments established at the new high-flux and high-performance research reactor (FRM-II) at the Technische Universitat Munchen (TUM), Germany. Carrying out investigations about the dynamics inside materials on the scale of picoseconds to approximately one nanosecond a high energy resolution has to be provided by using a disc chopper spectrometer with a chopper cascade of seven individual discs rotating at very high velocities. These chopper discs were designed, developed, in house manufactured and tested at the Institute of Light Weight Structures (LLB) at TUM. The basic design data for each chopper disc are: outer disc diameter Φ{sub}(disc)=600 [mm], design rotation speed 25000 [rpm], hub diameter Φ{sub}(hub)=100 [mm], 4 cutouts with different dimensions (depth 105 [mm], apex angle between 2.5 [°] and 14 [°]) and an anti-neutron coating area between the cutouts. An active magnetic bearing unit (provided by EADS Astrium) is used to realize the high rotational speeds. In the following the development, manufacturing and testing of these discs are outlined from a more practical point of view.
