Interaction effects of phosphorus and zinc on growth and chemical composition of Pistacino seedlings

The main and interactive effects of phosphorus and zinc application on the growth and chemical composition of pistacino (Pistacia vera L.) seedlings on calcareous soils were studied in a greenhouse using a completely randomized design with four replications, five levels of phosphorus (0, 25, 50, 100 and 200 mg kg~(-1) as monocalcium phosphate) and four levels of zinc (0, 5, 10 and 20 mg kg~(-1) as zinc sulfate). Twenty five weeks after planting, dry matter production (DM) and the concentration of zinc and phosphorus in roots and tops were measured for statistical analysis. Analysis of variance showed that the application of P and Zn and their interactive effects on dry matter production of the tops and roots of the plant were significant at 5 % and1 % levels, respectively. Maximum DM for tops and roots were obtained in the P_4Zn_3 and P_4Zn_1 treatments respectively. The concentration of phosphorus in roots and tops increased significantly (P<0.01) after application of phosphorus, but the levels of phosphorus concentration in the roots were lower than those in the tops of the plant. Phosphorus application significantly (P<0.01) decreased zinc concentration in both tops and roots, indicating a negative effect of the P X Zn interaction.
