Effect of IBA and rootstocks on the content of mineral element in xylem sap of cucumber

Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L) intacts or grafted onto rootstocks, Figleaf gourd (Cucurbita ficifolia Bouche) or Squash (C. maxima X C. moschata), were treated with indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) in greenhouse. Total mineral contents in xylem sap of cucumber decreased in the plants of cucumber grafted onto cucumber. But they were higher in cucumber grafted on rootstocks than in own-rooted cucumber, which was mainly attributed to the increase of anions, especially NO_3~- and PO_4~-.In all plants, the total mineral content of xylem sap from cucumber grafted on figleaf gourd is higher than that from own-rooted plants. Total mineral content and PO_4~- concentration increased after IBA treatment. After 6 weeks of IBA treatment, the most ion concentration kept increase still in most plants. Own-rooted cucumber showed the highest volume of xylem sap flux and the flux in the grafted cucumber is higher than that in own-rooted Figleaf gourd and root-owned Squash. IBA increased the flux of xylem sap in all plants from 2 days to 6 weeks after treatment.
