An estimated 40% of arable soils and 70% of non-arable soils of the world are acidic, and the growth of Rhizobium spp and the infection of legume roots are restricted by low pH and Al toxicity in these soils. Nodulation of subterranean clover roots has been shown to be restricted at low pH and by the presence of Al (Kim et al, 1985). Expression of nod genes in R. leguminosarum biovar trifolii was affected at low pH and Al (Richardson et al. 1988). In present study, the effects of low pH and Al on thetransduction of nodulation signal in alfalfa nitrogen-fixation system were investigated.
