The genus Rhizobium has been considered to comprise a sub-group comprising mainly nodulating species (but including the tumorigenic R. rhizogenes) and another sub-group comprising mainly tumorigenic species [Farrand et al., 2003, Young et al., 2001].Allorhizobium was proposed as a separate genus. Sequences for analysis are usually from type strains of species and the extent of the variability within and between species was unknown. If, for instance, the single sequence of Rhizobium {Agrobacterium) rhizogenes was not representative of the species because of mishandling of the strain or in sequencing, then an authentic sequence might produce a clade representing the genus Agrobacterium, distinct from Rhizobium. Such a result would invite support Agrobacterium as a separate genus.
