In the autumn months of 1999, a greater occurence of rust uredo stages was noticed on the leaves of a dominant variety (Alopecurus pratensis L.) in perennial grass stands in the region of the central Bohemian Forest (the location Zhufi, elevation 1050-1080 m). The effect of three methods of cultivation on the disease were evaluated at the experimental site: 1) Mulched stands (one mulching), (2) Unmanaged (fallow) stands and (3) Mown stands (one mowing). Evaluation of the health of the plants was carried out in September and October, at three particular times. Our investigation showed that the most considerable development of urediospores occurred on meadow foxtail, Alopecurus pratensis L., in the mown stand. Smaller infestation by urediospores was found in the mulched stand. The least infestation was found in the unmanaged stand. The identity of the rust on Alopecurus pratensis L. in the observed perennial growths proved to be Pucdnia perplexans Plow. The identification of rusts was carried out incooperation with the Department of Botany of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Charles University (RNDr.J.Markova,CSc.).
