A future for nature in NW-Europe

Nature in Europe is dominated by human interference; nearly all what is called natural is actually made through management. Mostly it is agricultural and forestry management that is dominating our vision but now management for water use, road management and outdoor recreation are also becoming important. The major issue at present is the rationalization of land use and its fragmentation through new spatial structures such as roads, railways, urban housing and fencing. Land use planning should therefore think of its task not of interfering and banning these developments, but integrating this with nature. Therefore landscape authorities have a task in the development maintaining biodiversity through the means of a coherent structure of ecological networks and by taking care of the complex management that includes involvement of all its stakeholders
