A focus in recent discussions on structure function relationships of photosystem II reaction centers is the identity of the primary electron donor in photosystem II (van Brederode & van Grondelle 1999, Dekker & van Grondelle 2000, Diner & Rappaport 2002). Another important question concerns the location of the triplet state (Kamlowski et al 1996, Noguchi et al 2001, Noguchi 2002) at low and high temperatures in PS-II reaction centers. The recent progress in structural analysis of photosystem II at 3.5 A resolution (Ferreira et al 2004) and at 3.2 A resolution (Biesiadka et al 2004) does allow to perform structure based calculations of optical spectra and calculations of excitation energy and primary charge transfer in photosystem II reaction centers which can help to answer the above two questions.
