Photosynthetic oxygen evolution requires the interaction of several different, yet closely coupled biochemical reactions. The light capturing, charge separation reactions of photosystem II (PSII) work in close cooperation with its oxygen evolving complex capable of utilizing this oxidizing power to split water into oxygen and protons. In Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, there are three extrinsic nuclear encoded polypeptides, OEE1, 2 and 3, which can be removed from the particle, by salt washing (Inoue et al 1983).
