This paper provides an overall view of the issues that must be faced when we want to retrieve bill of materials (BOM from now on) from the data managed by the CAD/CAM tools: what are the involved mechanisms and what are the main challenges. The main goal for retrieving BOM is usually the further load of the materials required for the manufacturing into the ERP system of the company. It explains the design of a software system, which apart from automatically retrieving the BOM, take advantage of them in order to populate a PLM application and then use the capabilities for controlling the 3D model which this kind of applications provide: change management, model maturity, product structure, Digital Mock-up, linked documents... The system has been developed and applied in NAVANTIA in a real project: the design and manufacturing of the S80 class submarine for the Spanish Navy with the commercial tools FORAN (CAD/CAM), Windchill (PLM) and NECORA (in-house ERP system). The main capabilities of the system are explained along the paper, its conceptual part and its practical implementation with the applications used in the mentioned project.
