Enrichment and Determination of Thiols in RFCC Gasoline Using GC Coupled with FPD and MS

The analysis of thiols in the residue fluid catalytic cracking (RFCC) gasoline is described. Thiols were enriched by the extraction method using KOH aqueous solution as extractant and dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) as modified extractant. A detailed identification and quantitative analysis of thiols in RFCC gasoline was carried out by using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and gas chromatography equipped with double-flame photometric detector (GC-FPD). A new method for determining the correlation between the boiling points and the adjusted retention times of thiols was developed in order to identify the thoils by their GC retention times and their boiling points. The correlation function between the boiling points of thiols and their GC adjusted retention times was established by the regression method using many standard thiols. The multiple R of the function is 0.9994 and the standard error is 2.7. Thus, the thiol compounds could be estimated from their GC adjusted retention times and boiling points.
