摘要

An experimental protocol is described aiming to enlighten the internal mechanisms which are activated before and during the fracture of natural building stones under compression. The specimens were made of Dionysos marble and "Alfas" porous stone from Crete. Two sensing techniques were used to monitor damage evolution, namely Acoustic Emission (AE) and Pressure Stimulated Currents (PSC) in an attempt, among others, to reveal the existence of correlations between their outcomes. The results were encouraging indicating that both techniques provide pre-failure indicators that could be used for health monitoring of structures made of natural building stones and especially of classical stone monuments of cultural heritage.
