摘要

The ability of a material to arrest a fast-running brittle crack is vital in offshore industries where cracks can initiate in regions of local stress in order to ensure the safety of the structure and the crew. The arrestability can be characterized through K_(Ia) (a material property) and the crack arrest temperature (CAT), which is empirically relatable to large specimens. However, as the plates used increase in size, these relationships begin to break down and the crack arrest behavior may not be fully understood. This review summarises current knowledge and findings, leading on to further development of crack arrest characterization in metallic materials including the future potential of the fully developed technology.
