We used acoustic emission (AE) monitoring to assess and evaluate the current condition and operational capability of an in-service double girder bridge crane. An array of eight piezoelectric transducers able to detect AEs was fixed on one of the two beams of the bridge crane to diagnose and solve possible issues with this in-service machinery related to micro structural degradation phenomena. Localization and evolution of damage process were characterized from the received AE signals exploiting different inversion methods based on signal processing and acoustic emission theory. The final goal will be to perform machine prognosis and calculate life expectancy.
