The year 2007 marks two decisive moments in the history of fracture mechanics: the publication of the world's first analytical paper devoted to a fracture problem by the German physicist, Karl Wieghardt, and the birth of the American physicist and engineer, George R. Irwin, the "Father of Engineering Fracture Mechanics". This contribution tries to shed some light into the life and works of these two scientists.
