Friction and Wear Behavior of Laser Irradiated Amorphous Metal

A YAG laser was used to improve the friction and wear property of amorphous Ni-P alloy made by electroless deposition. The relationship between laser scanning condition and the tribological properties were investigated. Proper laser irradiation make the surface hardness of Ni-P alloy higher than that of the furnace annealed alloy. The irradiated surface showed the lower wear amount than that of as-deposit amorphous alloy, and lower friction coefficient than that of the furnace annealed surface with similar hardness. It was suggested that the dispersion of fine Ni_3P crystals formed by rapid heating and cooling with laser scanning prevented the adhesion at friction.
