Recent changes in Latvian Building Codes require higher thermal resistance of building structures, air tight windows and mandatory ventilation systems. Use of mechanical ventilation systems may reduce the positive effect of improvements of thermal performance of building structures by 30-40% of the achieved economy. The possible solution in order to prevent the negative effect of mechanical ventilation system installation is introduction in Latvia hybrid ventilation systems. The paper is devoted to the trial implementation of hybrid ventilation systems in dwelling buildings done in the scope of the EU LIFE Programme supported project ECOVENT. The goal of the project is to try two different types of hybrid ventilation systems, to monitor systems performance during full calendar year and to show possibility of the system use in Latvian climate conditions. The paper gives theoretical working modes of the ideal hybrid ventilation system, describes advantages and shortcomings of the ventilation systems selected for the trial implementation.
