In Korea, sick house syndrome has been a major social concern recently. From May 2004, indoor air quality control law regarding public and multiple purpose buildings except a general housing has been being enforced in Korea. Korean government supports researches on the actual conditions of this subject and make efforts to regulate indoor air pollution. This study has been conducted to understand the present state of indoor air pollution by chemical pollutants in newly built Korean housing. Including two model houses, seven newly built houses were surveyed in summer and in winter. Investigation was conducted on indoor concentration of chemical pollutants, passive flux*) from building materials, ventilation rate, temperature and relative humidity.We used a passive measurement method developed by us, which is composed of passive diffusive samplers,ADSEC(Advanced Diffusive Sampling Emission Cell) for passive flux, vials containing PFT for ventilation rate.In all of the surveyed houses except model houses, the concentrations of formaldehyde and VOCs (e.g. toluene,ethylbenzene, xylene, and so on...) were significantly high and exceeded the guideline value ofJapan, which is 100μg/m3 for formaldehyde and 260μg/m3 for toluene. They ranged from 202 to 630μg/m3 and from 323 to 4299 μg/m3. Main ingredients of VOCs were toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene. Ventilation conditions were poor and ventilation rates almost in 0.2 ~ 0.3 h-1.A numerical calculation on air concentration and ventilation rate was conducted with COMIS.
