A wide range of indoor winter pollutant concentrations (0.42-22 ppm carbon monoxide, 0.06-2.3 ppm sulphur dioxide, and 0-7 mg/m3 PM10) were measured in households in the suburban "ger" districts of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. These houses are heated with coal and wood in vented, poorly sealed stoves situated in living spaces. Blower door testing results showed poor air sealing (9 to 50 air changes per hour at 50 Pa) relative to houses in other cold climates. The air fightness is strongly correlated with household ventilation because air infiltration is the only reliable mechanism for ventilation. No correlation was found between the measured pollutant concentrations and air tightness. It is suspected that outdoor pollutant concentrations and indoor stove emissions control the levels of indoor pollutants. It was recommended that greater understanding of the nature of the pollutant sources and sinks is necessary for guiding future mitigation efforts.
