The photolysis of HONO has been found to be an oxidation driver through OH formation in the indoor air measurement campaign SURFin (Alvarez et al., 2013). In this study, different HONO formation mechanisms are compared in the INCA-Indoor model (Mendez et al., 2015) and evaluated against measurements collected in a classroom. It is shown that some of the mechanisms strongly underestimated or overestimated the HONO formation depending on the assumptions and the surface uptake coefficient considered. While some of them capture the range of measured HONO concentration, none of them reproduce the observed HONO profiles in all conditions and especially at high NO_2 concentrations. We propose a new mechanism accounting for the dependence of the HONO yield on humidity, and the sorption of NO_2 onto surfaces, with possible saturation of these surfaces.
