VALUE-FOCUSED THINKING: USING OBJECTIVITY IN INTERFACE DESIGN

Good interface design is critical to ensure the user has what he needs when he needs it. Meeting this goal within project resource constraints is a challenge. A framework is needed to focus development on relevant interface design aspects. Value Focused Thinking (VFT) provides a methodology that is well suited for handling such multi-objective problems. In this study, a VFT hierarchy was developed with military analysts to identify desired values in a software interface intended to address data overload. This provided insight to the developer on where resources should be expended to provide the greatest benefit in the final product.
